“Merry Christmas.” Kat flings her arms around me as Diesel and her mom trail into the clubhouse behind her.

“Merry Christmas.” I smile, detangling myself from her arms. “Merry Christmas, Mrs. Walker, I’m so happy you made it.”

“Merry Christmas, sweetheart. And how many times do I have to ask you to call me Evelyn.” She leans in to give me a kiss. “I’m going to see if I can help with anything. See you two later.”

She leaves us alone, making a beeline for the huddle of women setting the makeshift table.

Since Red Ridge hosted Thanksgiving, Ray and Victoria insisted they host today at the Savage Falls compound. It’s been a hive of activity since we got here a couple of hours ago.

The old ladies—Quinn’s mom Dee, Rosita, and Victoria—have been slaving away all morning, getting the place ready and cooking up a storm. If I didn’t have such a pit in my stomach, I’d be salivating at the smells coming from the kitchen. But as it is, I can barely sit still, too anxious for everyone’s arrival.

“River.” Diesel pulls my attention. “Merry Christmas.” The twinkle in his eye makes my heart flutter as we share a secretive smile.

Kat makes a retching sound, lacing her arm through mine and staking her claim. “Go do whatever it is you biker types do,” she says with a secretive smile of her own. “River’s mine today.”

“Kat,” I hiss, but Diesel chuckles, amusement dancing in his eyes as he takes off toward where Ray and Crank are talking.

“Did you get them anything?” she whispers, guiding me toward an empty table.

“What? No! I mean, should have I gotten them something? We’re not…”

She gives me a pointed look. “You so are. Diesel couldn’t wait to get over here. He practically dragged me and Mom out of the house.”

“He did?” My chest swells, and it’s her turn to chuckle.

“You’re in so much trouble, you know.”

I frown, and she only laughs harder. “Stop,” I implore. “This is going to be hard enough without you making it worse.”

Kat holds up her hands and flashes me a wicked grin. “What’s Christmas without a little family drama though, am I right?”

“Did somebody say family drama?” Sadie and Quinn appear.

“Nope. We were just talking,” I rush out, hoping Kat will drop it.

“Are you okay?” Sadie Ray’s eyes narrow with concern.

“Me? Fine. I’m fine.”

“You keep saying that…”

So maybe I’d said it once or twice this morning at the house when she and the guys had come over to open gifts. It was loud and busy, and I’d sat quietly on the couch, watching them tease each other. But there was a ripple of tension every time Rhett looked in my direction and Ray caught him watching me.

And now I have to survive dinner with all of them.

Sadie Ray takes a breath, readying herself to say something else, but the doors open and men spill into the clubhouse, laughing and joking, everyone full of holiday cheer.

I find Jax and Zach immediately, surprised to see them sharing a joke.
